Building Education Center www.bldgeductr.org Client Description: A 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization in Berkeley, CA, offering classes and hands-on workshops in building and remodeling. The Center is supported by the fees paid by students; it receives no governmental aid or grants. Client's Objective: B.E.C. attracts students from all over the San Francisco Bay Area, and in summer, from all over the U.S. (A few international students also attend). The Center wanted to list all 50+ of their classes and workshops, and do so in a manner which allowed staff to update the site on their own. Previous site: The Center's previous site was a maze of frames with a multitude of confusing scroll bars. The entry photo was of a Florida concrete block house (rare in California) with some tools pasted over the image. A mix of different fonts and font sizes distracted visitors, and the organization of the Center's offerings (books, classes, etc.) was not clear. Text/Art Supplied by Client: No art, all the text. My Objective: As always, a fast load for those with 56K connections; the entry page is less than 50kb including images. A graphical look which connotes building and design. An entry page which presents the Center's offerings in an intuitively understandable fashion. Visitors should be one click away from viewing the Center's class listings. Budget: Zero. The Center doesn't have a lot of money. I donated my time. I believe its courses are an important resource for the region and a model for other groups elsewhere. Total cost/time: 45 hours. Challenges: To keep the class listings readable and easy for staff to update. Communicate that the Center draws students from all over the country, and that it encourages people to combine a Summer Intensive course with a vacation to the Bay Area. Come up with a fresh, clean look which connotes a friendly, professional place to take design and construction classes. Tricks: The menu rollovers surround the entry page photo of the Center. |
