European Institute of Vedic Studies www.atreya.com Client Description: A multi-lingual educational and publishing institute based in the South of France which offers courses in Switzerland and France as well as correspondence courses in German, Italian and Portuguese. The Institute also publishes books on Vedic topics in several languages. Client's Objective:The EIVS website wasn't keeping up with its expansion into new languages and publishing ventures; a new site was needed which allowed international visitors easy navigation via any of six languages through a wide array of courses and educational materials. The site had to be straight-forward enough for the staff to add and edit documents easily. Previous site: The Center's previous site had a workmanlike single sidebar-based layout which no longer allowed for easy navigation through the content. The site lacked a graphical identity, other than a lotus logo. Text/Art Supplied by Client: A logo of a lotus flower, which I re-colored, and all the text content of the site. My Objective: First and foremost, a design scheme which gave visitors a straightforward look at the site's complex organization of articles, books and courses. Being primarily a text-rich site, I wanted a simple graphical look which enhanced readability while establishing some themes of color and uniformity. Budget: Whatever it took. The site is growing fast and adding courses in additional languages, and a site which could expand was essential. Total cost/time: 60 hours. Challenges: Even though much of the content is in English, we wanted visitors who speak other languages to feel welcome; also, coming up with a layout of submenus which lets visitors see all the choices via mouse rollovers. Tricks: The menu rollovers reveal submenus in the upper left corner, keeping the page open and allowing for easy navigation of the entire site. A simple set of animations enliven the entry page, which prompts visitors to select a language. |
