Cop-Out--the underground newspaper of Lanai High, 1970: Issue 1, page 1

Page One of our first issue, with me as editor/typist. It features a great poem by Myles Hokama. Note the emphasis on "direct action"--asking readers to fill out an anti-war form and submit it to our English teacher (and advisor/muse) Burk Bagley, and also a call for environmental action. If you recall that the first Earth Day occurred in 1970, you'll get a sense of how "cutting edge" the Cop-Out was for its time. Colbert and I always managed to inject a little humor into each issue--in this case, the line "taking revealing photographs (of the pollution only, you wise-guy)..." Sophomoric perhaps, but then consider we were only Juniors in high school.
