Saturday Quiz: What Sport Should Be Added to the 2012 Olympics?   (August 16, 2008)

Q.: What Sport Should Be Added to the 2012 Olympics?

A.: 43-Man Squamish.

Here are the original rules, as explained in MAD Magazine #95 (June 1965): 43-Man Squamish.

I realise smaller nations such as Togo and Vanuatu will be hard-pressed to field 43 players (plus coaches and reserve players), but in our more enlightened era then the teams will of course be open to both male and female athletes.

The game is a delightfully zany mix of the worst aspects of football (soccer), American football, field hockey and rugby ("give blood: play rugby").

Of special interest are the extremely convoluted and sure-to-fail "plays" scripted for all 43 players.

The Olympics are serious business, of course, which is all the more reason to include 43-Player Squamish in 2012 to lighten up the deadly serious business of synchronized diving.
